Santakar says...

A book fair-cum-workshop was organised in tribal Museum at Koraput on 28.12.07(Friday) by Agragamee , Leading NGO from the region . While the books sold and displayed were written on the experiences of researchers on the tribal way of life , discussions too were centered to carry out more such researchs and now by the very people in the villages rather than some scholars from outside .

: ‘ We are treated as under developed according to the definition given by the government and other development agencies working in tribal districts like Koraput , while we consider ourselves to have gone out of our original development line that was on for generations because of the improper intervention of development agencies including the government ’ . This was the out burst of Surendra Gantha a tribal head from Mahadeiput panchayat in Koraput block in a workshop organized by ‘Agragamee’ a leading NGO from Kashipur in Rayagada district at Koraput today .

While alleging that the interventions to develop tribal community by pouring in more and more funds into the district was benefiting the implementing agencies and officials more than the common man at the grassroots level , as the people in rural areas had remained ignorant of most of the schemes . Considering the indigenous people ignorant and backward , schemes were made to adopt many modern practices and methods by these agencies of development while crushing the age old methods and know how carried through generations in the respective communities , he added.

Further, while the government was boasting of building capacities of tribal men and women by organizing meetings and fairs , the very tribal families were at loss as they were not able to develop their own traditional mode of life and living strategies. Such interventions had further crippled the tribal society leaving the youth no where , Madan Kirsani , another tribal youth from Machra village said. Palli Sabhas and Gram Sabhas were more of a myth rather than any reality in the major parts of the district for the absence of involvement of villagers in taking their own decisions , he added.

However the village meetings when done in the traditional system earlier , were well attended by one and all as there was a guaranteed scope of involvement for everyone in the society in the final decisions of development , K.C.Panigrahy , Director of Tribal Museum said . Emphasizing on the need of having a deep research on the real needs and aspirations of the people for bringing development in the region , he said that much was needed to learn from the Hill tribes than to teach .

Jagabandhu Samal , Retd. Professor in Economics and Kumarmani Sahu , Retd. Lecturer in Oriya reviewed some of the books published by Agragamee which were displayed in the book exhibition, being organized at the venue . The books were written on the tribal ways of life , their hopes and challenges . Vidya Das , Coordinator of Agragamee presided over the meeting .
