Demand For Central University

Freinds!

There was a meeting at koraput in the DRDA conference hall . people from Koraput and malkangiri districts took part in the discussion to demand for establishing a Central university in KBK region . Steps like writing to the government on the issue and sensitising people from differerent sectors was discussed . The challenging literacy percentage , reasons for leaving studies in the middle by students , poverty of the region and rising cost of higher education made it inevitable to have a central university in the region . However the speakers were not interested to have a dead university like Berhampur University but an active one , a dynamic one with scopes for innovation .
Please post your views on the issue .
Have a great moment .

Coffee ads to thier lives

KORAPUT: Coffee has freshen up the mornings of more than 300 tribal families in Koraput district , Brundaban Sahu , an employee in the Soil Conservation department at Koraput said . Each of these families have started earning at least Rs.20,000/- per year with the yield in the allotted 2 acres of coffee plantation .

As a part of the soil conservation activity in the mountains of Koraput , Machkund , Laxmipur and Nandapur blocks 24 hectors in 2003 and 264 hectors in 2004 were taken up for growing coffee with the participation of community . People living below poverty line were selected as the beneficiaries and each of them were given the ownership rights on 2 acres of planted land by the district administration , he said .

The department had spent Rs.41,000/- towards the planting materials while each of the beneficiary was given Rs.15,000/- in phases towards their physical labour over four years’ time . The communities took guard of the plantation and are reaping the fruits since last year .Apart from the production of coffee , the move has encouraged people to protect big trees in the mountains as they were required for giving shade to the coffee plants . Encouraged with the success , the department was planning to promote coffee plantation in yet another 450 hectors in the district during the current financial year , he said .

Naxalites Observed martyrs' Week

KORAPUT: Naxalites have started observing Martyr’s Week in the naxal infested region of undivided Koraput district on Saturday . The members of the outfit erected temporary Martyr’s memorials at Sikpai chowk , Kakurkunda chowk, Gomphakunda , Telerai and Motu Pusuguda on the road between Malkangiri district head quarter and Kalimela block head quarter , in the district .

The naxals and their supporters have also reportedly observed the week by offering floral tributes at the permanent pillars at Bodiguda , Teckguda and Kakumanur villages that had been constructed earlier in memory of the naxalites who had died in various encounters with the police . Observation of the day was also reported from Poplur and Kurmanur villages in the cut off areas near Chitrakunda .

Apart from covering the memorial pillars with red flags , the naxals have also pasted posters and had hung banners inviting public support for their action . The vehicular traffic between Malkangiri and Kalimela was badly affected .

Even though there was no incidence of violence reported from anywhere in the naxal infested regions of Koraput , Malkangiri and Rayagada districts, the successful erection of temporary pillars by the naxals at Sikpai Chowk , barely at 10 Kms from the district head quarter in Malkangiri district and that too at around noon today has put the police on a highly challenging position . Looking at the sensitivity of the observations , police has been put on top alert in all these areas .

HAVE A GREAT QUIZZING!

Huts with natural colours

KORAPUT: It’s a tiny hut of Patraput village in Jeypore block of Koraput district stands with pride to challenge the shades of many modern paints. Almost all the huts in the village dominated by Bhumia tribe bear the same look . The walls are shining , floor is deep black , boarders are painted red virtually at no cost . However no paint manufacturing company could claim the paints to be theirs . The colours are prepared using different kinds of soil and barks and fruits of different trees from the forest , Kamala Pujari , an old woman of the village said .

The red soil is collected from the hilltop, White shining soil from the river bed after performing specific rituals and worshiping to get the blessings from the mother earth . The mud prepared from these soil is then mixed with the barks of wild plants and fruits like Bahada and boiled in pots .

Additions of the natural ingredients help the mud more sticky . This coloured paste when applied on the walls appears shining and prevents termite to catch on the wall for a long time , she said . The floor , polished with a black paste prepared by mixing cow dung with farm soil collected from their paddy field maintains to remain dry even on a rainy day, Daimati Rampuria , another resident from the village said .

Agriculture in Koraput -a new hope

KORAPUT: Agriculture in Koraput is by default organic , Arabinda Padhee , Director of Agriculture department said . He was talking to the Agriculture officials from Koraput , Malkangiri , Rayagada and Nowrangpur districts in the special circuit house of Koraput. The tribal communities of the region with their rich traditional practices have been maintaining the organic value of the soil compared to that in the other parts of the state. Hence the drive to promote organic farming would begin from these districts , he said .

The agricultural farms at Semiliguda , Rayagada and Umerkote would be the sites of research work and fields of demonstration for the organic farming . Koraput hill tract , being the place of origin for rice , traditionally rich varieties of species of rice like Kalajeera would be preserved as a part of bio-diversity conservation in the region , he added. Farmers from the district and other places would be brought for exposure visits . For this these farms will be upgraded by adding various farm machineries in addition to the existing ones . Funds from BRG and NREGA would be drawn for the purpose . The farmers will also be encouraged to go for mechanized farming in their fields .

The farm machinery of these farms would be made available to the farmers on Custom hiring . The price for such transaction would be kept low to facilitate the poor farmers , he said . Expressing his concern over the long standing vacancies in the department and farms the Director has assured to take up the mater with the state government .

Incentive for the officials working in his department were equally vulnerable to the Naxalites and hence he would discuss with the government in this regard , he assured . Later speaking to the media he said that a new agricultural policy was on the cards and would be brought out soon as a part of giving priority to agriculture in the state .

Sudarsan-the artist with difference

KORAPUT: There is a ladder and at the end of it Lord Jagannath smiles with his loving eyes . Sudarsan says the ladder symbolized the 22 sacred steps in the temple , crossing which one could get the glimpses of the Lord . This was just one of the lot of picture displayed in Sudarsan’s Art gallery “Chaka Akhi” in the Govt.Art School premises at Jeypore .

Sudarsan Nag , a handicapped youth in his early twenties has crossed many hurdles carrying his polio affected leg for the last 22 years . He could hardly walk and the wheel chair was his companion all along . He recalled those moments when an elderly lady , whom he called Punam aunty as their neighbours in Parabeda colony of the town . He was reading in std. VI then and she had asked him to draw some pictures with her . And that’s it . The journey with pencil , colours and paper had begun for Sudarshan .

His father was a poor mason and certainly could hardly support him to grow in making a hobby with fine art . But she was the force behind him and he continued to draw and paint pictures of his dream . Later he had joined in the Govt. Art School as a student to pursue his Diploma in Fine Art. He learnt all that he could to get appreciation from every corner . Punam aunty would have been happy to see the exhibition today , he recalled . But he does not know where she was .

Sudarsan is a student of +3 Final Year student in Vikram Dev college taking subjects which were far off from fine art . He wished if he could have had the degree in fine arts . But many Sudarshans had lived in the posters and died in banners , he said . The school of fine art at Jeypore managed by the Department of Culture , for the last 50 years has not crossed the boundary of offering a diploma to its students . Students had to go to Khalikote in Ganjam district to get a degree in the subject and students like him who had struggled with their financial poverty could hardly cross the ghat and most of them had ended up in writing banners and posters meeting the local needs, he said .

An exhibition no matter how small it might be gives a lot of energy to grow and thanks to Annapurna Real Estate of Jeypore who had sponsored the event , he said . Even though fine art could not bring sufficient financial strength to make a life of it , he has the next target , an exhibition in the state capital . Whenever people asked him if he had any hope to reach the stage where Sudarshan Patnaik , the sand artist of international fame had reached , he was thankful to his parents , he added .
