Santakar says...

Laba Jani , a tribal child from Mantriput village in Semiliguda block in his early teens has lost his right hand while working in a stone crusher unit at Beheraguda on the way to Damanjodi . ‘I was trying to take out a stone from the conveyor belt and my right hand was pulled into the machine as suddenly someone had started it suddenly ’ , Laba said while the doctor was dressing his cut wound near the shoulder . The hand had to be cut completely as all the nerves and veins were damaged and the arm was hanging from the shoulder , Dr.Niranjan Mishra , the surgeon who had conducted the operation said .

Laba is the third child among the five in the family , Subri Jani , his father said . Laba had to leave his studies well before completing his primary education to help the family members so as to meet the needs of the family , Hako Jani , his mother added . Just like most people in the tribal community , they also did not know whether Laba was a minor .
The stone crusher unit taking the benefit of their illiteracy had taken the thumb impression of Subri on a piece of white paper , probably to make a parent’s declaration on the age of Laba while the patient was left to suffer without adequate care and compensation by the company management , Taraprasad Bahinipati , MLA , Koraput alleged . Demanding an enquiry into the alleged mischief by the crusher unit management , he further had asked for immediate arrest of the proprieter of the crusher unit and release of payment of Rs2 Lakh to the family as compensation .
Reacting to the statements recorded from the family members in the district head quarter hospital , S.K.Nath , DIG of Police , South Eastern Region asked the police to initiate an enquiry today . Balakrishna Sahu , District Collector of Koraput , getting sensitized over the situation advised the doctors to go for ossification test to determine the actual age of Laba so as to know whether he was a child labour
